HHP Qualitative Research Collaborative

HHP Qualitative Research Collaborative

Qualitative research can provide rich and contextualized meaning to human experiences and behaviors. It can provide the ‘why’ behind the findings from surveys and improve the design of services and resources to promote health and well-being. It is also increasingly used in the context of user testing and experience research. Effectively achieving these goals and outcomes of qualitative research requires strong methodological expertise.

The College of Health and Human Performance HHP Qualitative Research Collaborative provides support for rigorous qualitative research (including qualitative research within mixed methods studies) through its Faculty Affiliates, who have experience in qualitative theory, research design, and methods to ensure that research meets guidelines and standards for conduct and reporting. Services span the research lifecycle, from study design development through data collection, data analysis, and the clear and transparent reporting of methods and results in manuscripts. Services can be used at any or all stages of the research life cycle, including:

  • Project development: defining study aims and research questions, determining methods, IRB help, writing interview and focus group guides, protocols for visual-verbal modalities (e.g., photovoice or participatory drawing)
  • Data collection: conducting interviews/facilitating focus groups
  • Data management: organization, documentation, and deidentification of data
  • Data analysis: coding in qualitative software; codebook development, qualitative analysis
  • Manuscript contribution: methods, results, editing

* Transcription services are not directly provided through the HHP Qualitative Research Collaborative; we can provide a list of transcription services and their rates for those interested in using transcription services. We also can provide example budget justifications.

Information on grant proposal collaborations:

Requests for collaboration attached to grant proposals must include adequate and appropriate funding for the level of effort required for the HHP Qualitative Research Collaborative faculty affiliate in contributing to study design, training of collaborators, and data collection and analysis. HHP Qualitative Research Collaborative faculty will negotiate appropriate FTE during proposal development and consultation discussions. While every project is different, some prior examples have used these levels of FTE.
