MA in Education in Physical Education
The Physical Education, MAEd is a 100% online, performance-based program designed to develop advanced competencies in K-12 physical education. The curriculum integrates both theory and practical application of pedagogy in a variety of areas: assessment, technology, supervision, effective teaching practices, intercultural issues, and content knowledge in physical education.
The physical education core courses are designed to align with components of National Board Certification by focusing on enhancement of teaching effectiveness, assessment, reflective practices, research, differentiated instruction for diverse learners, and the development of supervisory skills and intercultural competencies. Elective courses are included to meet physical educators’ needs in current school settings: adapted physical activity, coaching, and motor learning. The professional core requires courses in leadership and communication, differences in human learning, and research. The desired outcome is preparation of specialized physical education professionals who are able to exemplify teaching effectiveness for K-12 students’ education and to serve as leaders in the physical education profession.
MAEd-PE program requires a minimum of 33 s.h.

To be considered for admission into the Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) in Physical Education, applicants will as asked to submit the following information:
- A completed application form
- Application fee
- A copy of current teaching license.
- Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
- A written statement of purpose.
- Letters of recommendation (3)
ECU Graduate School’s minimum admission requirements include:
- An earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. regionally accredited institution, or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution before starting at ECU.
- A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale for regular admission consideration.
- Applicants whose native language is not English need to demonstrate competency in written and spoken English through the TOEFL/ IELTS/ PTE/Duolingo exam, documentation of having earned 18 or more credits with a GPA of 3.0 or better from a U.S. regionally accredited university, or successful completion of all levels of ECU’s Language Academy program.

Program Requirements
Graduate Assistantships
Graduate assistantships in the Department of Kinesiology are available on a competitive basis. A full-time graduate assistantship requires 20 hours per week with and pays a minimum of $4500 per semester with some assignments paying higher amounts. In addition, summer session assistantships may also be available. Individuals interested in applying for a graduate assistantship in the Department of Kinesiology should complete an Application for Graduate Assistantship and submit it, along with a current Resume, via e-mail to to Dr. Tom Raedeke at raedeket@ecu.edu.
The department funds graduate assistants to assist with achieving instructional, research, and service goals. Most of the department’s graduate assistantship funding supports instruction in department’s Lifetime Physical Activity and Fitness Program or laboratory sections of other undergraduate courses in Kinesiology. Positions related to research and service programs are also available, but on a more limited basis. Prospective graduate students should inquire with the Graduate Program Director, individual faculty members, or laboratory directors, to learn more about opportunities related research and service.
Students enrolled in academic programs in Kinesiology have also been successful in acquiring graduate assistantships through other sources such as Campus Recreation and Wellness as well as the Athletic Department.

Additional Information
The following information applies to all ECU programs that lead to a license to work in any level in public schools, i.e. teachers, principals, librarians, social workers, school counselors, superintendents, etc.
Upon successful completion of educator preparation program degree requirements and licensure requirements for the State of North Carolina, such as, but not limited to, testing and national assessments, candidates will be eligible for an ECU recommendation for a NC license. However, final licensure granting decisions are the sole responsibility of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction not ECU. Candidates who graduate and seek out of state employment will have to meet the receiving state’s requirements for licensure. There is no automatic licensure reciprocity between states. ECU will verify the completion of an approved, accredited program for candidates who seek employment out of state, and those candidates will be responsible for working with the receiving state to complete any additional requirements needed to obtain the license for employment.
