About AROTC
Army ROTC is an educational opportunity designed to prepare men and women to become future leaders in the US Army while completing an undergraduate, graduate, or other professional degree program. Army ROTC recruits, retains, develops, and graduates leaders who are mentally, physically, emotionally, and morally ready to serve our Nation as commissioned officers in the United States Army. Our Cadets/Student Experience
Army ROTC students have unique opportunities to participate in many special activities including: Color Guard, Cannon Team, Ranger Challenge Team and other morale activities. There are also a wide variety of optional professional development training programs available including: Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain Warfare, Northern Warfare, summer internship programs, Drill Cadet and Cadet Troop Leader Training Programs. As a cadet in ECU’s Army ROTC program you will have access to our world class, obstacle training course and repelling stations.

Our Cadre/Faculty has a wealth of knowledge and diverse military experiences. Officers enthusiastically engage our students in and out of the classroom through interactive lectures, training opportunities, community service projects, as well as other activities. Alumni
Approximately 400 officers have been commissioned from the East Carolina University Army ROTC program over the 30-year history of the battalion. Distinguished graduates of the Pirate Battalion have commanded battalions in combat and have risen to the rank of colonel.
Why Join ROTC?
- World-class leadership and management training that can be completed in conjunction with any chosen academic major.
- The nation’s largest source of merit-based college scholarships. Includes full-tuition scholarship, monthly subsistence allowance, and funds for textbooks.
- Traditionally a four-year program, however it can be completed in just two years.
- Reserves or National Guard soldiers may be able to complete the ROTC program in two years while you serve with your unit.
- Can participate in a paid internship (link to SMP). 2nd Lieutenants who participate in the program earn on average $700 more a month than other 2nd lieutenants.
- You commission as a 2nd Lieutenant when you graduate with the potential to earn $68,000 within your first four years on active duty. Receive a monthly stipend (tax-free) of $420.
How to Join
- Basic Course Qualifications (Entry as a Freshman)
- Be a full-time student at East Carolina University
- Be a U.S. Citizen by Junior year
- Not have any Felonies
- Advance Course Qualifications (Entry as a Sophomore or Junior)
- Receive Basic Course Credit
- Pass an Army Physical
- Pass an Army Physical Fitness Test
- Have a college GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Be a full-time student at East Carolina University
- Be a U.S. Citizen by Junior year
- Not have any Felonies or any unadjudicated civil convictions
