“Interdisciplinary Service Learning Study Abroad Program to Peru”
May 12 – May 21, 2018
PERU
How is life for U.S. children and families different or similar from those living in Peru? Students will have an opportunity to examine closely various cultural institutions (schools, hospitals, segregated or inclusive facilities for children and adolescents) and people’s daily lives, particularly interactions between adults and children, peers, family members and other community members on an ongoing basis as a part of this study aboard trip. Additionally, teaching strategies such service-learning opportunities, site visits, guest speakers will help students make connections between their coursework and experiences. Use of personal reflections/narratives and group discussions will be an integral component of this study abroad experience. Students will have an opportunity to complete research project if interested as well. The total price for the program is $5, 500 (includes travel within the country, food, accommodation and ALSO FLIGHT TICKETS). An added $150 dollar discount will be applied towards the total price of the trip, only when students register for this program by OCTOBER 27th 2017.
(Students will earn 6 course credit hours in HDFS along with Service Learning Credits)

“Health and Well-Being of Children and Families in the Alps”
June 2 – 16, 2018
AUSTRIA, GERMANY, AND SWITZERLAND
This 15-day study abroad in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland is open to all majors. The course will explore how the lives of individuals, families, and communities in the Alps are similar and differ when compared with those in the U.S. Emphasis will be placed on examining educational opportunities and community services that support child and family life and well-being. There are many educational and cross-cultural events including visits to the innovation center at the Technical University in Munich, the Offices of the European Commission, Innsbruck Center for European Research (ICER) at the University of Innsbruck, Swiss Museum of Transport, visit to Olympic Site, Bergisel Ski Jump and more.
Dr. Bernice Dodor, Human Development and Family Science and Drs. Bello, Karriker, College of Business will be leading this exciting program, which will include earning up to six credits of HDFS 4100/6100 Study Abroad. Most students will use this credits for their major, minor or general electives.
The program cost is $4,876 (airfare is not included) – Estimated airfare is $1,393.
The cost of $4,876 includes transportation for all program-sponsored activities and excursions. Students will be housed in double occupancy hotel rooms. Most breakfasts and several group dinners are included.
Note: The Rivers Scholarship is open for students who are planning to study abroad spring 2018, summer 2018, or fall 2018. Students are encouraged to apply! Scholarships will be awarded in November.

“An Exploration of Culture within Natural and Human-Built Environments”
June 7-19, 2018
SOUTH AFRICA
This 13-day South African Study Abroad program is open to all majors. This course will introduce students to how individuals interact with their peers, family members and other community members within the Cape Town and Johannesburg regions. In addition, students will learn about the specific human-built and natural environments within South Africa by experiencing various aspects of the cities, villages, parks we will visit. On tour, a deeper examination of South Africa’s people, food, education, entertainment will be highlighted. Students will also learn about the history and impact of apartheid, which includes an in-depth look into Nelson Mandela’s life and his international influence. We will learn of South African’s involvement in the slave trade and transportation routes that started in the 17th century. Finally, student travelers will experience some of South African’s eco-tourism parks/wildlife reserves and discuss how these impact South African families and their economy.
Dr. Alan Taylor and Ms. Kelly Taylor will be leading this exciting program, which will include earning up to six credits of HDFS 4100/6100 Study Abroad. Most students will use this credits for their major, minor or general electives.
The program cost is $6250 (~$3850+Flights)

“An Exploration of Culture within Natural and Human-Built Environments”

SPAIN-FRANCE-ITALY
This 12-day Study Abroad program is open to all majors. This course will introduce students to how individuals interact with their peers, family members and other community members within Italy, eastern Spain and southern France. In addition, students will learn about the specific human-built and natural environments within these countries by experiencing various aspects of the cities, villages, and historical sites we will visit. On tour, a deeper examination of each country’s people, food, education, entertainment will be highlighted. Student travelers will learn about the history and culture of each country by visiting well-known landmarks and sites that highlight art, music, religion, etc. Besides spending significant time exploring Barcelona, Nice, Florence and Rome, students will also experience the Vatican and Monaco’s Prince’s Palace. This once-in-a-lifetime tour is packed with historical, cultural and modern exploration.
Dr. Alan Taylor (HDFS) and Dr. Nicholas Rupp (ECON) will be leading this exciting program, which will include earning up to six credits of HDFS 4100/6100 Study Abroad or six credits of ECON 3323. Most students will use this credits for their major, minor or general electives.
The program cost is $4925 (~$3375+Flights)
