Why did you originally decide to major in Marriage and Family Therapy?

I began as an undergraduate student at University of Georgia at which time I started working as an intern at the Aspire Marriage and Family Clinic at UGA. Originally I was working in the clinic office, but eventually began interacting with clients.

I always thought I wanted to do therapy in some way, but I didn’t know exactly where I wanted to land. The mentor-ship from the Aspire Clinic, and learning more about marriage and family therapy helped me realize that this is where I wanted to be.

Why did you pick East Carolina University to complete your Masters?

When I began searching for a Master’s program several undergraduate students from University of Georgia mentioned ECU. I came to ECU for the interview and knew this was the place for her. I think the interview really did it for me, I knew this was a good program, but it was weird to enjoy an interview. I really enjoyed being at ECU and I fell in love with it more than I thought I would.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

After graduation I plan to move back to Georgia to be closer to my family and friends. I plan to gain licensure in the state of Georgia, and then secure a job in the Marriage and Family Therapy field working with adolescents.

What is your long-term goal?

One day I hope to open my own private Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic.

What is your favorite aspect of your major?

My favorite aspect about working in the Marriage and Family Therapy field is when clients start to see change within themselves. It’s really great and exciting when I can see it, but it makes it even more meaningful and rewarding when my clients start to see the change.

Do you have any advice for young students wishing to pursue a career in the Marriage and Family Therapy field?

You are competent and you are capable, and with love you can create so much change in other people.
