It’s been said if you enjoy what you do, you will never work a day in your life. East Carolina University alumnus, Alex Langley (’03, ’06) has experienced that level of contentment in a career filled with community service. His work has helped youth, adults, seniors and dogs.

“I enjoy what I do so much…forging collaborations for the betterment of your community is very rewarding,” Langley said.

An athletics supervisor with the Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department, Langley oversees the youth and adult sports programs and serves as chair of the Employee Wellness Committee. His previous experience includes leading the department’s senior center to accreditation by the National Council on Aging and its National Institute of Senior Centers, a distinction held by three other centers in North Carolina. Langley coordinated youth sports and membership services with the local YMCA and served as director of intramural sports and recreation at N.C. Wesleyan College.

Although canines are not his typical target population, Langley’s involvement in developing plans for the design and construction of the 12-acre Best Friend’s Dog Park in Rocky Mount along with coordinating Paws in the Park, an annual event, has been impactful. “This involvement with such a diverse group has been awesome. It has given me the opportunity to serve others and positively impact individuals in my community. It’s the reason I enjoy what I do so much,” Langley said.

Langley looks back at his time at ECU and recalls fond memories. “I had the opportunity to interact with some great people including fellow students, professors, and members of the local community,” Langley said. “One of my professors, the late Dr. Nelson Cooper, was without a doubt the most influential person in cultivating my development and passion for the recreation profession.”

He recommends that students seek out networking opportunities with peers, professors and the community. “I still to this day keep in touch with professors, classmates, community members, and many others I met during my time at ECU,” Langley said.

Langley has given back in many ways. He serves on the ECU RCLS Alumni Board and is the current executive board president. He also served as mock interviewer for East Carolina Career Center on several occasions.

Alex currently resides in Rocky Mount with wife Jessie whom he met while working together at NC Wesleyan. They have 2 daughters – Lennox (6) and Lyllian (3).
