Internship Interview - Sarah Elmore

Name: Sarah Katherine Elmore

Internship Location: Greenville, NC

Organization: ECU Regional Training Center (FASDinNC and Pitt County Coalition on Substance Abuse)

Responsibilities: As an intern with the ECU Regional Training Center, I work on projects for both Pitt County Coalition on Substance Abuse (PCCSA) and FASDinNC. I work closely with my supervisor to achieve goals, promote events and create educational materials (brochures, flyers, etc.). I attend conferences, community events, training sessions, and board meetings, as well as assist with our STOP 2.0 series. The STOP 2.0 meetings take place once a month and include a panel of four people who answer questions about the opioid problem and their experiences with opioid misuse disorder. I also help facilitate meetings with the PCCSA Youth Team which is comprised of 15 youth from high schools throughout Pitt County. They meet twice a month. My main project this semester has been to plan and implement a training on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The training will take place on November 13th and it will be my job to deliver the majority of the information to attendees. Additionally, I am collecting sponsorships and donations for PCCSA’s 4th Annual Dinner of Hope in February.

Advice to Upcoming Interns: Find an internship with an organization you are truly interested in. Ask questions when you are not sure of something. Do not procrastinate. Take initiative. Use every opportunity to learn and gain experience; that is what this time is for.

About Sarah Katherine Elmore: I enjoy spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, and playing with my one-year-old German Shepherd puppy. I have a deep passion for public health, traveling, and serving others. I hope to combine my passions after graduation by joining the Peace Corps as a health educator in Belize.
