Cardiovascular Physiology Lab

Cardiovascular Physiology Lab

The overarching goal of the Cardiovascular Physiology Lab is to improve cardiovascular wellness in health and at-risk populations. We aim to do so by 1) investigating the mechanisms that determine aortic hemodynamics, blood pressure regulation, and vascular function; and 2) understanding the cardiovascular implications of acute and chronic exercise interventions. We utilize a variety of non-invasive lab techniques, including: echocardiography for assessing left ventricular structure and function, vascular ultrasound for assessing endothelial function, applanation tonometry for assessing arterial stiffness and wave reflection, and beat-to-beat blood pressure and heart rate for assessing autonomic regulation and reactivity. The lab currently studies an array of populations including young healthy adults, aging and hypertension, pregnancy, and thoracic aortic aneurysm.

Student Research Opportunities

There are opportunities for undergraduate and graduate (MS and PhD) students to become involved in the lab. Students will work on ongoing cutting-edge research, may gain unique lab skills (ultrasound, blood pressure assessments, exercise testing and training), participate in research dissemination, and conduct theses/dissertations under the mentorship of Dr. Stock.

Please contact Dr. Stock (stockj23@ecu.edu) with your CV/resume if you are interested in joining the lab.
