Cannon inspired at West Point leadership conference
East Carolina University student Chloe Cannon described the McDonald Conference for Leaders of Character as a phenomenal opportunity. The event was held in West Point earlier in March, providing undergraduate cadets and attendees chances to collaborate while focusing on enhancing their leadership skills and working together to explore strategies to address global issues.

Cannon, a public health major who is in the Honors College and is president of Preconception Educating Pirates (PEP Squad), said the experience did positively impact her approach to leadership and service. Her trip was supported by the HHP Student Professional Development assistance fund.
“The McDonald Conference for Leaders of Character was a truly great experience,” Cannon said. “What stood out most was the diverse perspectives represented. It was great to meet and learn from so many motivated students and leaders from various backgrounds. As the first ECU student to attend this prestigious conference, I felt both honored to represent our university and inspired by the connections made with remarkable student leaders and mentors.”
Cannon was nominated earlier in the semester for an ECU News Pirate Profile, highlighting her path to studying public health and research interests, in addition to her leadership involvement like the Maternal and Child Health Scholars, Training and Enrichment Program and tutoring with the Pirate Academic Success Center.
The McDonald Conference for Leaders of Character began in 2012. Attendees this year learned about strategies in change, embracing challenges and building momentum toward various change efforts. Keynote speakers included Jane Nielsen, Chief Operating Officer at Ralph Lauren, and retired Lt. Gen. Reynold Hoover, who was named Chief Executive Officer of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
