Kulas named interim chair of Kinesiology Department

East Carolina University’s College of Health and Human Performance announced associate professor Dr. Anthony “Tony” Kulas as interim chair of the Department of Kinesiology, beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

Kulas served as a faculty member in the ECU Department of Health and Education (2005-2019) before transferring to the Department of Kinesiology in 2020.

Since arriving at ECU, Kulas has established and maintained successful collaborations in kinesiology. Notably, he operated his laboratory within the College of Health and Human Performance’s Human Performance Laboratory and has mentored many undergraduate and graduate kinesiology students in biomechanics and motor control studies.

“His record of publication and other scholarly activities evidence his collaborative approach, ability to coordinate and manage diverse groups of personnel,” HHP interim dean Dr. Stacey Altman said. “Dr. Kulas has a record of leadership that includes multiple service assignments wherein he gained institutional perspective. Additionally, he served as a graduate program director and gained knowledge and skills that include, but are not limited to, curriculum development and management, enrollment management and resource allocation. … It also is appropriate to reiterate we are grateful for the service of Dr. JK Yun in the role of department chair for nearly five years and look forward to his continued successes in teaching, scholarship and service.”

Kulas’ experience also has included serving on search committees for positions allocated to kinesiology, and providing input on strategy for laboratories and programs in the department.

“I and humbled, grateful and excited for the opportunity to serve as the interim chair for the Department of Kinesiology,” Kulas said. “I also would like to thank Dr. Yun for his leadership as chair for the department.  We have a great department and I am excited to work with the faculty in my new role.”
