‘Excellent turnout’ for Alzheimer’s, dementia resource fair
The Office of Healthy Aging, representing the College of Health and Human Performance and School of Social Work, co-hosted an Alzheimer’s and dementia resource fair Oct. 3 with Joyner Library, bringing social work students, community members, community partners, ECU staff and faculty to the library for quality interactions and conversations. Various individuals and groups of attendees had the chance to talk with local representatives about caregiving, brain health, resources and other related topics in a casual setting inside the library for the two-hour fair.
“We had an excellent turnout and were able to provide information to people who will most certainly benefit from these connections,” said Dr. Abby Schwartz, Carolyn Freeze Baynes Scholar in Social Work and director of the Office of Healthy Aging.
Resource fair participating vendors included:
- North Carolina Brain Registry
- ECU Health
- ECU Communication Science & Disorders
- ECU Family Medicine Nutrition, (MIND diet)
- Alzheimer’s Association NC Chapter
- AARP Coastal Region
- ECU Music Therapy Clinic
- Amedisys Hospice

After the fair, many people remained to listen to Michael Dorsey for an artist talk and reception for “Alzheimer’s Fantasies,” an exhibition of nearly 30 uniquely colored drawings and digital prints on display in the Janice Hardison Faulkner Gallery, on the second floor of the main campus library, into late November. This exhibit is in honor of the late Susan Lynne Dorsey, a former library employee in the Teaching Resources Center.
Susan Dorsey was described as a caring and positive co-worker and individual. Michael Dorsey described his work as a visual conversation to himself while serving as a caregiver for his wife. Sale profits, which some occurred Oct. 3, will be donated to the North Carolina Alzheimer’s Association.
