Second cohort for summer immersion program

The 2024 version of a summer immersion program began Friday for a new group of students to dive into research and scientific discovery and learn more about pathways to graduate studies at East Carolina University.

HHP’s Dr. Stephanie Richards, a professor of environmental health sciences in the Department of Health Education and Promotion, is program director.

This is the second of four cohorts during the grant timeline. The STEM-based program is funded by a $1.3 million North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation grant, designed to build connections between ECU and students from the state’s minority-serving institutions with a goal of establishing pathways to public health graduate education.

Friday’s orientation events included a meet and greet with host labs and ECU faculty and staff. There were other discussions, activities and overviews facilitated by Richards and Dr. Ariane Peralta with the ECU Department of Biology.
