A look back at Fall Graduation, 2021

Scenes from Graduation Day for HHP

The College of Health and Human Performance was highlighted during East Carolina University’s afternoon commencement Friday on graduation day, when more than 1,800 ECU students turned their tassels to officially become alumni.

Joining HHP graduates for the afternoon ceremony were: Allied Health Sciences, Brody School of Medicine, Engineering and Technology, and Nursing. Below are quotes, video and photos from the event:

“We’ve been waiting for this day for four years. It’s just exciting.” -Skylar Martin, health fitness

“Considering a lot of graduates from the past couldn’t have this (an in-person event) since we just got back off this COVID issue, I feel like this would be something I would look back on and really regret it if I didn’t come. So I’m very thankful we’re able to do it in person.” -Shaun Roach, exercise physiology

“Don’t be scared to let this world knock you down, because whether you like it or not, it’s going to. Implore your ability to adapt and learn from it. … Whatever life throws at you next, look out in the mirror and tell them, ‘This isn’t my first rodeo. I survived 2020 and 2021, so whatever you got, bring it.’ Congratulations ECU’s fall class of 2021.” – Chandler Ward, SGA president

“I know each of you are problem-solvers, relationship builders, independent thinkers and workers from when you arrived at ECU. I know many of you have held a down a job while attending college. I’ve had a job since I was 16. That is the grit and tenacity of a Pirate. Don’t be afraid to out-work the rest of the room. That’s our Pirate chip.” – Matt Slate, keynote speaker and 1996 ECU graduate.

“The journey to this day required a great deal of personal sacrifice. You have persevered, and today, we celebrate you. … It is, indeed, a great day to be a Pirate.” – ECU Chancellor Philip Rogers
